Seth Thomas Mantle Clock

Seth Thomas (founder) has been making clocks under that trade name since 1813 and is one of America's premiere clockmakers. He finally incorporated using that name in 1853 and the name is still under patent today. Seth Thomas was famous for great quality mantle clocks with robust 8-day movements that were easy to operate.

Most of them, like this one, were 8-day, time & strike. They would strike the number of the hour at the 12 o'clock position and a single tone at the half hour. The Cathedral Gong has a wonderfully resonant sound and is a joy to hear. The case finishes were multitude once Seth Thomas hit upon the idea of clading the cases with an early form of a man-made material they called "Adamantine". This provided two advantages, it reduced the overall weight, and still allowed them to simulate stone and marble finishes in a variety of colors and textures.

For us today, it provides a surface that can easily be polished to bring it back to its original glory. This particular clock has a light oak "Adamantine" finish that is in great shape. Our head clockmaker has it winding, chiming, and keeping time just as it did when it was new.

It has a really great look on a mantle with its "Egg & Dart" style bezel and its central gold acanthus leaf pierced dial ornament. The ornate gold feet, the gold "Winged Mercury" heads at the sides, and the gold capped columns flanking the dial all combine to make a really great looking Victorian clock. It is fully warrantied for one year for parts and labor. So, you may buy with confidence.
